Discover a village idyll that appeals to all the senses
This picturesque mountain village, with a population of 1,000, is nestled in the heart of the Harz Nature Park along the Zorge River. The many well-maintained half-timbered houses are a true feast for the eyes. On the outskirts of town, a hiking trail leads you straight into the whispering silence of the forest, before you feel the power of nature at the roaring waterfall of the Neuer Teich. Something different at the Hammerschmiede distillery: Here, the finest spirits gently caress your palate.

It’s not just the neighboring town of Wieda that boasts superlatives—Zorge also has quite a lot to show for itself. The town was founded in the 16th century to mine iron ore. Mining later gave rise to a local iron industry that included locomotive manufacturing. And it was this industry that brought Zorge its greatest fame: In 1842, the machine factory produced the first steam locomotive for the state railway of the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg, which is thus also considered the first locomotive manufactured in Germany.
Today, a full-scale model remains, which you can view alongside a Normag tractor manufactured in Zorge. The Zorge Local History Museum reveals more fascinating details about the town’s history.
You can enjoy the best view of Zorge from the surrounding lookout points at the “Pferdchen” and at the bell tower. The latter is the starting point for numerous hikes through the vast forests of the Harz Mountains.
Tip for aspiring hiking champions: At the “Pferdchen,” you’ll find the stamp station 58 of the Harz Hiking Pin. The climb is definitely worth it—thanks to the wonderful view and a charming pavilion, this spot was named the most beautiful stamping station in 2013. You won’t want to miss it!
In addition, since 2021, Zorge has had its own hiking pin, officially recognized by the Harzer Wandernadel. The free stamp booklets with quizzes and the Zorge Hiking Badge are available at our tourist information office in Walkenried and from some lodging providers in Zorge.
The Forest Swimming Pool in Zorge is a swimming paradise for young and old alike and is one of the most beautiful facilities in the southern Harz Mountains. The spacious 1,400-square-meter swimming area is divided into two pools—one for swimmers and one for non-swimmers.
The program features swimming fun for the whole family: Here, you can show off your acrobatic skills together on the 1-meter or 3-meter diving boards, romp around with water toys, or splash around with your little ones in the children’s pool.
Competitive swimmers do their laps in the 50-meter pool area.
You can relax on the 4,500-square-meter lawn and treat yourself to treats, ice cream, and snacks from the kiosk.
In Zorge, everything is ready for fun-filled summer days by the water.
Taste Experiences
Located in the center of Zorge is the Hammerschmiede-Manufaktur, which produces fruit liqueurs and the Harz whiskey “Elsburn.”
You can get a glimpse into the production process during the regular guided tours . Of course, the tour wouldn’t be complete without a tasting of these fine wines afterward.
